Constructed in Kutaisi, Georgia, in the framework of the project Waste Free Rivers for a Clean Black Sea – MWM-GMR (BSB457), the composting site covers around 3000 sq. m. and for each stage of the composting process a dedicated section is organized: delivery/screening area, composting area, compost curing area, and the storage.
Green Waste Composting Center became fully operational in spring 2021 and since then more than 30 tons of green waste was collected by the lead beneficiary Self-Government City of Kutaisi. The full process to decompose organic material into the hummus-like material takes 5-6 months and the compost product is used as a soil conditioner for the green spaces from the city.
Composting offers an environmentally superior alternative to using organic material for landfills because composting reduces methane production, and provides economic and environmental co-benefits. From the official opening of the center, Self-Government City of Kutaisi had several replication meetings with the representatives of the municipalities from Imereti region and meetings on the Eastern Partnership platform for the transfer of knowledge.
The next objective of Self-Government City of Kutaisi is to build a center for collecting and recycling materials from construction sites.
