With summer just around the corner and the nature in all shapes of green, the green waste composting center from Kutaisi (Georgia) is fully operational.

Constructed in the framework of the project Waste Free Rivers for a Clean Black Sea – MWM-GMR (BSB457), the composting site covers around 3000 sq. m. and for each stage of the composting process a dedicated section is organized: delivery/screening area, composting area, compost curing area and the storage.

With a glance to climatic conditions in Kutaisi, a large number of warm days per year, it is expected that the composting site will provide the implementation of more than 2 full composting cycles, with more than 3000 tons of final product yearly.

All the arrangements to collect the green waste are set up as the Self-Government City of Kutaisi is the lead beneficiary of the project and the compost product will be used as a soil conditioner for the green spaces from the city. This is the first composting center open in western Georgia and the beneficiaries are confident that their project will inspire the stakeholders.

Kutaisi is one of the largest cities of Georgia with more than 147000 inhabitants About 60000 tons of waste are generated in Kutaisi per year. 47% of generated waste are biodegradable waste, which are composed of both kitchen waste and green waste (i.e. landscaping waste, waste from parks and gardens, trees). About 7-8% of generated waste are green waste, which are completely disposed to the city’s landfill. Introduction of biodegradable waste composting will contribute to significant reduction green waste consequently the negative environmental impact
