The International Conference “Environmental Toxicants in Freshwater and Marine Ecosystems in the Black Sea Basin” will be organized in Kavala, Greece, during 8-11 September, 2020, by International Hellenic University (GR) and Dunarea de Jos University of Galati (RO) in partnership with Institute of Zoology, Republic of Moldova, Institute of Geology and Seismology, Republic of Moldova, and Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development, Romania, in the frame of the MONITOX project.
The Conference is focused on the current developments on environmental monitoring of freshwater, marine and coastal areas with an emphasis on the results obtained in the frame of the MONITOX project. It will provide an opportunity for members of the target groups, scientists, decision-makers and stakeholders to meet each other and to establish new relations and partnerships. Further, cooperation in environmental research and management will be linked among countries from the connected regions – Black Sea, Northern Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Basin, for implementing a new ecotoxicological system for regional environmental monitoring in the ecosystems of the Danube region and the Prut, Dniester and Nestos rivers, the Black Sea and Aegean Sea coast, Danube Delta and Nestos Delta, regarding the concentration of toxic and carcinogenic pollutants.
Are expected to participate researchers and specialists members of the project teams, scientists and young researchers, students and alumni representing other institutions from Greece, Romania, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and other European countries. Selected papers will be presented in plenary, oral, poster or virtual sessions, covering a wide range of topics grouped in three interrelated sections:
- Monitoring of toxicants in Rivers – Deltas – Seas ecosystems in the Black and Aegean Seas Basins
- Water quality, human health and biodiversity
- Environmental technologies, oil fingerprinting, restoration and management of aquatic ecosystems
The contributions main subjects will be: methods employed for the investigation of toxic and carcinogenic compounds and microorganisms and their migration in different environmental compartments and risk to human health; studies on the influence of human activities on the state of aquatic ecosystems; environmental biomonitoring techniques; statistical techniques used to investigate sources of toxicants in enviroment and correlations between multi-stressors and substances with negative impact on population health and ecological status; new methods for detection and quantification of pharmaceuticals (antibiotics, analgesics, contraceptives) and personal care products in surface water; detection of microplastics in environmental samples, cosmetics and personal care products; environmental technologies and remediation solutions for mitigation of toxicants (heavy metals, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, petroleum hydrocarbons, nutrients, emerging contaminants, endocrine disruptors, radioisotopes).
