International recognition has grown over the past decade regarding the harmful ecological and socioeconomic impacts of abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), which poses a significant threat to marine wildlife and ecosystems, particularly in the Black Sea.
The project Exorcising the BLACK Sea's Silent Killers - BlackNETs (BSB00164) aims to mitigate this issue by removing over 8,000 kg of ALDFG, raising awareness, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to prevent future losses and promote a litter-free marine environment.
And since action and awareness-raising initiatives go hand in hand, the project partners initiated a campaign to engage the public in addressing the problem of discarded fishing gear.
The #GhostBuster campaign was launched on the social media channels of the project, focusing on mitigating the impact of ghost fishing gear. Beyond simply raising awareness, the campaign prioritizes collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including fishers, policymakers, and NGOs, encourages responsible action and fosters a sense of shared responsibility.
The #Ghostbuster campaign isn't just about removing ghost gear; it's about sparking a movement to protect the Black Sea. Follow the project on Facebook and X to see how the campaign is progressing.
