ANEMONE (BSB319) – Joint Scientific Cruise for Monitoring the Black Sea Environment

ANEMONE (BSB319) – Joint Scientific Cruise for Monitoring the Black Sea Environment

The project “Assessing the vulnerability of the Black Sea marine ecosystem to human pressures“ (ANEMONE), coordinated by the National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa”, Romania, in partnership with the Institute of Oceanology – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey/Marmara Research Center, the Turkish Marine Research Foundation and the Ukrainian Scientific Center of Ecology of the Sea announces today, 30 September 2019, the beginning of the Black Sea Joint Scientific Cruise, one of its core activities.

Therefore, a team of 17 marine scientists from 4 countries (Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine) will embark R/V “Mare Nigrum“ for sampling water, sediments and marine organisms to assess the health status of our sea. For more than one week, as a reflection of the bold and collaborative spirit embodied in ANEMONE, biologists, chemists, and physicists will speak only “one language”, of the Black Sea science, with the aim to enhance knowledge and better protect the marine ecosystem.

This scientific cruise will involve the use of various sea sampling methods for qualitative and quantitative determination of different parameters. Each day, the research team plans to conduct sampling at four sites, covering a total of 21 sites. Each sampling exercise will take at least few hours to complete due to the depths involved and the time it takes to deploy the equipment. Samples will be sorted out, photographed, preserved and labelled on board the research vessel.

At the end of the cruise, the samples collected will be studied by scientists from all four countries. The results will be shared, collated and published as the report on the “Status of the Environment of the Western Black Sea“.
