The project Smart and innovative solutions for green and clean rural areas in Black Sea Basin opened a Small-Scale Composting Facility in Ungheni city, Republic of Moldova.

The establishment of this facility marks an important step toward introducing sustainable, local infrastructure for biodegradable waste management. The main objective of the composting facility is to process green and organic waste through an organized windrow composting system, contributing to reduced landfill disposal, increased recycling rates, and the production of high-quality compost for municipal landscaping, public green spaces, and community gardening.

This initiative directly supports Ungheni’s environmental objectives and circular economy goals, in line with the city’s Waste Management Strategy and the principles of the European Green Deal.

The composting process is now fully underway, with continuous monitoring of temperature, aeration, and moisture levels in line with established composting protocols. Once mature, the compost will be used for urban greening, soil improvement in public gardens, municipal landscaping projects, and the enterprise’s greenhouse, effectively closing the local organic waste loop.

Future development of the Small-Scale Composting Facility includes:

• Scaling up composting volumes to incorporate organic waste from local markets and households, alongside public awareness campaigns
• Establishing a demonstration and training area to host school groups, community workshops, and educational activities on composting, waste separation, and circular economy principles

Serving both operational and educational purposes, the composting facility represents the first composting infrastructure of its kind in the region and demonstrates a practical, replicable model for sustainable waste management and circular economy implementation.
