Green Urban Resilience (BSB00006) – Community Garden Park in Uzunköprü

Within the project Green Urban Resilience: Green Climate Change Adaptation Solutions for Smart and Resilient Cities in BSB, a green recovery investment has been implemented in the city of Uzunköprü, Türkiye.

The investment creates a new 3,000 m² climate adaptation and community garden park, designed to help mitigate the impacts of heat stress and climate change while creating a healthier, greener, and more inclusive urban environment.

The investment is one of the project’s case studies, through which project partners are putting practical climate adaptation solutions into action and demonstrating how cities can become more resilient to the effects of a changing climate.

The new park combines green infrastructure, community facilities, recreation, learning, and nature-based solutions. It provides residents with a space where they can socialize, learn, grow food, enjoy nature, and discover practical ways of contributing to climate resilience.

The park includes:

  • A natural-material playground, providing a safe and attractive space for children to play and connect with nature.
  • A smart solar-powered bench, equipped with a solar panel that provides electricity for charging mobile phones and supports Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • A stone-fragment alley, creating a distinctive pedestrian feature within the green space.
  • A community learning point, where training sessions and knowledge-sharing activities on climate change and adaptation can take place.
  • A landscaped rain garden, designed to collect and manage rainwater while supporting biodiversity and healthy vegetation.
  • Community garden areas, giving residents opportunities to garden for educational, recreational, or hobby purposes.
  • Large tree-planting areas, increasing shade and vegetation while contributing to the reduction of urban heat.

The Uzunköprü park is more than a new public green area. It is a pilot study area for heat-stress mitigation and climate adaptation, demonstrating how relatively simple, locally adapted interventions can improve urban resilience.

By combining shade, vegetation, rainwater management, sustainable gardening, renewable energy, education, and community participation, the park creates an integrated approach to climate adaptation.

Most importantly, it puts people at the center of the transition towards a more resilient city. The park offers a place for residents to meet, learn, grow, and be inspired while contributing to a healthier urban environment.

Through this investment, Uzunköprü is demonstrating how green infrastructure and community action can work together to address climate change and build a more resilient, sustainable, and livable city.
